Paul Kenneth Salon Gives Long strands a 'NEW' look with out sacrificing inches!

Give long strands a new look without sacrificing inches. The PK Salon design team in Woburn, Massachusetts, shares their style steps for creating this pin-curled bob:
1.After blow-drying hair with a volume spray and a large round brush, spray hair thoroughly with a thermal protector. Take one and a half-inch square sections, curl with a one-inch iron and pin-curl-clip them to base to set. Spray with PK Flex Hold Hairspray and PK Shine Spray
2.Starting at the nape, take down curls and sprinkle base with PK Volume Texture Powder. Back-comb each section all the way up to occipital bone in back and two inches above the ears. Spray top and bottom with PK Flexible Spray.
3.Starting center back, use a natural bristle brush to gently smooth down the top of the teased section, then with hands pinch ends into a point and start rolling under until you reach the nape. Secure the center of the roll to the base with a long bobby, using a sewing motion to weave in and out of the roll. Continue this technique on both sides and pin sections together so it looks like one consistent roll. Spray rolled hair with PK Flexible Spray.
4.Take down curled sections one by one, smooth with shine serum, gently shake to create an “S” like pattern and drape creatively over rolled section. Secure with long hairpins. Continue this technique for each pin curl.
5.On the top “Mohawk” section, sprinkle PK Volume Texture Powder onto the base of each section, backcomb lightly and smooth curled ends with shine serum. Again loosely drape curls creatively on the surface of the other curls, creating an “S” wave framing the face. Paul Kenneth Salon, 343 Main St, Woburn MA 01801, Tel: 781 935 7750, www.pksalon.com

Paul Kenneth Salon...Big on Bangs!

Big on Bangs

The design team at Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa in Woburn, Massachusetts, is doing a bang-up job of creating short, straight cuts with lots of chic and flair. For this model’s look, short bangs slim the face and set off the central features, while the red tips add just enough up-to-the-minute color to liven up the style, as well as give it an unexpected finish.

Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa's TRENDSETTING BLONDE

Brighten up a lackluster silhouette and shade with an of-the-moment, spring-infused finish ---- with a right-now cut!

CUT: Define your fabulousness by allowing strands to fall into a precise, clean-cropped cut. “Short, hard lines leave long bangs to create texture,” explains the PK Design Team.
COLOR: A gloomy shade is given a fashion and color lift for the new season! “We double-processed the hair to a platinum blonde [shade] from the dull, light brown color,” says the team. The white-hot hue helps transition mane into warmer weather with its gentler, fresh appearance.
STYLE: Use a Denman brush to smooth and create shine in the hair while blow-drying. Make sure to use thermal protectant spray to protect your tresses from unwanted heat damage.

CHANGE UP Pump up the pastels with a soft hint of pink in the front of an otherwise platinum pixie. The sexy hue combined with wisping, frontward facing layers, adds movement to the cropped cut.

Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa adds 'AWAKENED ANGLES'

Hit the refresh button with this face-framing A-line bobbed style! CUT: Go daytime chic or nighttime glam with this classic bob cut coupled with sexy fringe! The exaggerated length in the front of the mane is complemented by piecey bangs, giving this sleek style a hip, hot edge. COLOR: Combining a gradual cut with a rich overall color is the perfect way to incorporate dimension into a smooth silhouette. “We created a deep, rich chestnut brown color from a more uneven ash brown,” tells the PK Design Team. The luscious hue shimmers and warms the face, creating a renewed vibrancy in the entire style. COLOR USED: Matrix Logics Imprints professional haircolor. STYLE: Achieve this timeless finish using a Denman brush and light volumizing spray. “The spray gives a bouncy, beautiful feel to the hair, while the Denman brush is essential for the sleek, shiny look,” explains the PK Design Team, who recommend using a blow-dryer instead of a flat iron.

Change Up

Reinvent your mane by simply switching up the texture! Here, sleek strands are transformed into playful coils to achieve a completely different vibe.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, "The Amazing, Life Changing, Dr. Lew Comes to Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa"

'Psy-Cosmetologist' is an excellent resource. Its insightful and thought provoking.  Dr. Lew is leading the way with his idea that 'Specializing' is the differential edge to create a successful future.  My staff is so excited to the next level with these creative concepts. A must read that will change your tomorrow.
Dr. Losoncy has been called 'The motivational psychologist for the beauty profession." In his three decades with Matrix he has inspired tens of thousands of hairdressers throughout the world by bringing motivation, encouragement, people skills, teamwork and excellence within a message of humor and optimism.  His energetic message reveals the deeper, human purpose of hairdressing.  Although Dr. Lew's mission is for the beauty profession, his 25 books have sold over a million copies. He is the co-author of "ON," with Matrix's GM Colin Walsh, and his more recent books include, "if it weren't for you, we could get along." "Salon Psychology," "Early poppers: the secrets of self-starters,"

"Having Dr. Lew come into The Paul kenneth Salon and Spa  has been life changing." says Kathryn Merritt

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, What Blonde Bombshells Are You?"

ROSE GOLD

Taylor (similiar to Blake Lively's warmed-up marigold shade is perfect for transitioning from winter to Spring. Paul Kenneth, Taylors colorist, mixes golden, honey, and apricot hues to create the multidimensional color. He finishes with nearly ivory highlights around the front to brighten her face. Because the lowlights underneath are prone to fading, he recommends frequent conditioning masks, like PK Spa MD, Rich Repair 60-sec Treatment (a favorite among his busy clients).

VANILLA BLONDE

If you want to go baby blonde like Michelle (similiar to Michelle Williams), be prepared to make a similarly major commitment. Paul Kenneth recommends touching up roots every three weeks. Ask your colorist for a bright golden hue with pale highlights—and because bleaching the hair this often is damaging, consider keeping your hair short to prevent breakage.

BLUSH BLONDE

Even women with very fair skin can pull off blonde hair without appearing washed out—just look at Suzanne (similiar to Emma Stone). The trick is choosing a hue that will add warmth to the cheeks, like this blush blonde. "She has warm tone blonde undertones with flecks of gold highlights all over," Paul Kenneth says. To maintain it, ask for a strawberry toner to use between salon visits. This will fill in the gaps where color has faded and keep hair from looking brassy.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, Who Are The Experts "

From my firend, Patrick Mcivor......These days, anyone and everyone can pose as an expert, and they do. Do we want a 13-year-old blogger telling women how to use products because we, the actual experts, haven’t gotten around to posting content?  I have news for you, that’s what is happening now, and if you don’t take the time to utilize social networking to promote your business, that 13 year old will pull your business right out from under your feet.
Personalities/brands like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton are also taking a piece of the pie – they recommend products and people buy them – and they are NOT experts in the beauty field, they pay people to do their hair and makeup! They pay us! It’s happening in other industries too – a book recommendation from Oprah a is more powerful than one from the New York Times – she’s not a trained expert, either is the 13 year old girl, but they know how to market themselves as experts and it’s time that the REAL experts make some noise.
Start with Facebook – create a salon page separate from your personal page because professional pages offer valuable analytics about who visited your page and how often.  Professional pages also don’t max out at 5,000 friends – something I found out the hard way.  Having to accumulate those 5,000 again takes time, so do it right the first time.
YouTube is the other way to offer tips and advices to the public. I advise salons to create their own channel, because on YouTube, the more videos you have, the easier you are to find. To increase traffic to your channel, include QR Codes on your retail products and advise clients to scan them with their smart phones to access expert info on how to use the products.
At the very least, utilize Twitter to share quick tips and ideas and let people know what’s going on in the salon and on the road.
Just because we’re hairdressers doesn’t mean we have to shy away from computers like we did in the 80’s. Have fun and take control of your social network. Hey, if a 13 year old can do it, so can we!

Another very powerful tool that my friend did not mention, Pinterest.  This tool allows followers to like several different looks as well as use it as a communication too to discribe for their own style to the hairdresser.

Remember, we are the professionals and it is our responsibility to advise our guests on beauty!

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Holiday Hair Ideas Continued"

TRY BLUNT BANGS

This type of fringe can overhaul your look in an instant. Plus, it works with just about every hair type (except for curly hair). Just tell your stylist not to cut bangs too thick or they'll overwhelm your face. To style, comb wet bangs flat and blow-dry with a nozzle attachment pointing down, and use your fingers to pull the bangs straight. If you have very curly hair, use a small, round natural-bristle brush to pull them taut.

GET MESSY

There's something romantic about hair that looks as though it were just casually pinned up. To create the effect, run mousse through damp hair and let it air-dry before sweeping it up—this way, even if you pull your hair back tightly, it will look soft.

BULK UP
For the most natural-looking body, concentrate volume on the sides of hair instead of at the crown. Spritz volumizing spray on damp roots and comb it through hair, then blow-dry with a medium-size round brush, pulling the brush under the hair and out to the side

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Holiday Hair Ideas Continued"

GO DEEP and DARING
A deep side part makes any style more sophisticated. To make a clean part, apply styling cream to damp hair and, using the pointed end of a rattail comb, draw a part that lines up just beyond the arch of your eyebrow. Blow-dry hair straight, then spritz all over with a bit of shine spray and smooth with your palms. Then twist hair on the top of your head and stick in chop sticks to secure for added affect.

CREATE ROMANTIC CURLS

Even straight hair can hold these curls. Prep damp hair with volumizer, and blow-dry with a round brush. Next, wrap sections of hair around a medium-barrel curling iron, stopping an inch or two from the roots. Place the curls randomly so they don't look like old-fashioned ringlets.

DO A SLICK TWIST

1. Run a few drops of shine serum through damp hair and blow it straight with a paddle brush.
2. Brush the hair straight back so it's slick against the scalp, then gather it into a low ponytail just above the nape.
3. Tie the ponytail with an elastic and wind it around the base to create a bun.
4. Tuck the ends underneath and hold them with bobby pins.
5. Stick a few more pins into the bun in various spots to secure it.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Holiday Hair and More"

GIVE YOURSELF A WAVY BLOWOUT

A blowout with body looks more modern than a stick-straight one. Begin by blow-drying the hair straight with a round brush, then part it on the side and, using large hot rollers, coil small sections of hair under, rolling them up toward your part. Then use a paddle brush to coax the curls into a few big waves.

TRY A CROWN BRAID FOR EVENING

This sweet hairstyle takes only minutes to create. Braid a ponytail hair extension that matches your hair color and pin it at the nape of your neck. Wrap the braid around your crown, pinning the ends at your nape, then let your hair hang loose or twist it into a low knot directly below the braid.

 COME UNDONE

There's nothing sexier than hair that looks like a wind blown set in place. Mimic the effect by scrunching large sections of damp hair in your hands as you move a blow-dryer in circles around your head (hold it about six inches away). This fluffs the hair rather than matting it down. Another trick: Rub your crown lightly, like it's a baby's belly, for a few seconds to create slept-in texture.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN PK'S UNIVERSE, 'Tips To Winterproof Your Locks'

The weather in New York City has been just beautiful lately--no humidity, crisp fall climes with lovely blue skies. But we know what's coming: dreadful snowstorms, crazy hair-snapping cold spells, and dare we say it--hat hair. Yuk! This year, I plan to head off bad winter hair by being prepared! Here, some top tips from Paul Kenneth, owner of Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa, on how to best winterproof your locks.

Stock up on leave-in conditioners and protective oils!

Moisture and natural hair go hand in hand. You must keep your locs moisturized in order to retain growth and prevent damage and breakage. The protective oils acts as a cozy coat between your hair and the heat. During the cold dryness of the winter months, damage from a curling or straightening iron can be worse than usual.  I suggest using PK Moroccan Shampoo and Conditioner in the winter because is helps keep your hair hydrated and prevents breakage and split ends. Wash once a week and deep condition using PK Spa MD Keratin Infused Luxurious Hair Mask conditioner. Follow up monthly with a Keratin Infused treatment using my PK Keratin Treament. This will keep your hair hydrated and healthy during the dry winter months.
http://www.pksalon.com/store/pk_specialty.html#leader2

If you're straightening out or curling up, coat your hair with a leave-in oil such as PK Moroccan Oil. This product contains has Moroccan Oil, so it really works to protect your locks. Thes oild are used many times as a rust protectant for woodworking tools . . . so it means business!

Air-dry
let your hair air-dry,as much as possible, before blow-drying it completely. The less hot air you infuse into your locks with the dryer, the more moisture you'll seal in from your shampoo and conditioning products. Use Moroccan styling products to help with dry time and air styling.
http://www.pksalon.com/store/pk_specialty.html#leader2

Keep frizz away
Frizzy hair is one of the worst things about the winter's dryness (think static cling, hat hair . . . yuk!). Stop the problem before it begins. I love anti-frizz products and swear by them during the winter. My favorites are PK Smooth Reaction, PK Frizz Zero, PK Texture Shine, and more.  All of them use  a vary small amount because of the concentration of product. One of my favorite, old school technique, is putting a small amount of finishing spray on a hairbrush, and lightly brush it through your hair from top to bottom.  I use this techniques on all my photoshoots so that very little product is used to get a great static free result. www.pksalon.com

Vitamin D & Hair Growth
Its winter time and the sun is not out as much which means you may need to supplement the vitamin D your NOT getting from the sun through eating high vitamin D content foods such as salmon, tuna, eggs among just to name a few. Vitamin D prevents hair loss which is exactly what we don't want in the winter. If you notice excess shedding in the winter months a lack of vitamin D may be to blame. I recommend eating foods that contain vitamin D but if you must take a supplement please consult your doctor first.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN PK'S UNIVERSE, 'Mark Wahlberg Uses The Same Sunless Tan'

Mark Wahlberg uses the same sunless tan system that
The Paul Kenneth Salon uses for its' guests

Want a beautiful, natural looking glow for the holidays. The Paul Kenneth Salon has a 'new' state of the art tanning room. Currently running 'Holiday Specials for Sunless Tanning'. go to http://www.pksalon.com/Book-Appointment.html and book today.

Mark Wahlberg brought out his inner Marky Mark as he was photographed on a balcony having a spray tan applied for his role in his latest film.  In “Pain and Gain,” Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson play a pair of bodybuilders that get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.  To look the part in this “based upon a true story” movie, Wahlberg needed the assistance of a weekly Norvell Double Dark spray tan applied by Norvell’s own Tennille Cardinal.
“As a 13 year sunless professional for Norvell it was an honor to spray an icon like Mark Wahlberg,” Cardinal told celebrity news website toofab.com. “He was professional and very down to earth each time we met. He is in amazing shape, you can tell he put the time in for this movie and made my job so much more exciting.”
For more on Wahlberg’s spray tan, check out these articles from US Weekly and toofab.

FROM 'THE MASTER ARTISAN' PK'S CORNER PRESENTS, 'How to Lifeguard Your Hair...''

One of the challenges of summer is that, in spite of all we do to protect our skin and hair from the potential damage of the sun, our hair stresses out as a result of the effects of chlorine and other chemicals from swimming pools as well as salt water at the beach.

Clarifying Shampoo Treatment by PK Professional is a deep cleansing shampoo that does more than just wash your hair. Clarifying Shampoo Treatment reaches deep into the hair to help neutralize chlorine and remove minerals. It cleanses hair of all build-up, coatings and oils while helping to prevent and repair chlorine damage. Clarifying Shampoo Treatment moisturizes dry, brittle hair. Use it before and after chlorine exposure. Follow up with an instant or deep conditioner and your hair will look like you spent all day in the salon instead of lounging by the pool. This shampoo helps prevents oxidation and, like all of our shampoos, is color safe. Yet, despite its intense deep cleansing properties, Clarifying Shampoo Treatment is mild enough to use as your regular shampoo. It's a must have all year round for swimmers and other athletes as well as those who have well water that contain various mineral deposits. http://www.pksalon.com/store/shampoo.html#leader3
Clarifying Shampoo Treatment is a great example of a product that combines the best of nature and science to neutralize the effects of chlorine, protect color, create shine, strengthen, smooth and provide moisture.

Clarifying Shampoo Treatment can be used as a treatment under a plastic cap for 10-15 minutes for enhanced benefits. It's great for the scalp. http://www.pksalon.com/salon/hair_sculp.html

Clarifying Shampoo Treatment by PK Professional  helps you maintain healthier hair all year round.

FROM 'THE MASTER ARTISAN' PK'S CORNER PRESENTS, 'Tips to Keep Hair Shiny...''

Glossy, shiny, luscious locks are definitely a goal worth striving for and can make a world of a difference not only in how you look, but how you feel about yourself. Believe it or not, it's not all about the products (though they are important)- it's the little things that make a big difference when it comes to locks that are silky smooth as opposed to coarse and dull. Read on for some amazing shine-enhancing tips brought to you by PK Professional stylists from the Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa.

Tanya's Tips: - Rinse with cooler water after shampooing to close the hair cuticle.
- Use your cool shot button on your dryer to smooth the cuticle when you're finished drying.

Nina's Tips -When you blow-dry your hair, go from roots to ends. if you don't, it will make your hair frizzy and can damage the cuticle.
- Use an oil-based product to add shine & protection, like (Moroccan, Bassu or Aragon).
- If hair is starting to look dull, visit your PK Professional Colorist and get a clear color glaze

Paul Kenneth.....
-For brunettes, Instead of glazing with a clear, I like to glaze using a shade that is two shades lighter than what is there. Use a very warm shade because warm shades reflect more light than cool shades which absorb light.

- Wash hair less and CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION! It is so important to condition. Use a deep conditioner at least once a week and leave it in over night for the best result.  Any healthy, shiny hair starts with great conditioned hair!
