Paul Kenneth Salon Gives Long strands a 'NEW' look with out sacrificing inches!
Give long strands a new look without sacrificing inches. The PK Salon design team in Woburn, Massachusetts, shares their style steps for creating this pin-curled bob:
1.After blow-drying hair with a volume spray and a large round brush, spray hair thoroughly with a thermal protector. Take one and a half-inch square sections, curl with a one-inch iron and pin-curl-clip them to base to set. Spray with PK Flex Hold Hairspray and PK Shine Spray
2.Starting at the nape, take down curls and sprinkle base with PK Volume Texture Powder. Back-comb each section all the way up to occipital bone in back and two inches above the ears. Spray top and bottom with PK Flexible Spray.
3.Starting center back, use a natural bristle brush to gently smooth down the top of the teased section, then with hands pinch ends into a point and start rolling under until you reach the nape. Secure the center of the roll to the base with a long bobby, using a sewing motion to weave in and out of the roll. Continue this technique on both sides and pin sections together so it looks like one consistent roll. Spray rolled hair with PK Flexible Spray.
4.Take down curled sections one by one, smooth with shine serum, gently shake to create an “S” like pattern and drape creatively over rolled section. Secure with long hairpins. Continue this technique for each pin curl.
5.On the top “Mohawk” section, sprinkle PK Volume Texture Powder onto the base of each section, backcomb lightly and smooth curled ends with shine serum. Again loosely drape curls creatively on the surface of the other curls, creating an “S” wave framing the face. Paul Kenneth Salon, 343 Main St, Woburn MA 01801, Tel: 781 935 7750, www.pksalon.com

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, "To Ombré, or NOT to Ombré"
'Ombre'', The French termed hair trend,
is the hottest trend now! This look has been spotted on many A-list Celebrities…but is it right for you? This look is not for everyone..... Remember, trends come and go, so don’t think you need to jump on the bandwagon to be cool! This trend features darker more natural hues at the base with a gradual dyed lightening at the ends.
A Few Positives:
1) It has a grown out look to begin with, so maintenance can be stretched out past your average time frame (5-6 weeks). 2) You get that sun kissed, summery, beachy, look any season....creating fun dimension and movement at the stroke of the brush at anytime you want!
4 things to consider before taking the plunge into Ombré:
1) Consider your profession and lifestyle
Not every workplace is supportive to the funky, high contrast bold version of this trend. A more subtle approach is your safest bet, with tones only being 1-3 levels apart.
2) Shades must compliment your skin tone and wardrobe choicesYou can choose 1-3 shade to create the Ombré effect, but the colors must work with your complexion, and not distract from your clothing.
3)The more creative the color choice…the more maintenance required to maintain vibrancy or depth of the color
4) Make sure you see an experienced professional. An Ombre' can be beautiful, however an Ombre' gone wrong can be a disaster resulting in a bad look, more investment to fix and/or compromising the condition of the hair.
The Paul Kenneth Professionals are well trained to deliver beautiful, rich Ombre' techniques to all types of hair. www.pksalon.com call or stop in for a quick, complimentary consultation.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, What Blonde Bombshells Are You?"
BUTTERY BLONDE
Blondes with brown or hazel eyes, like Stacy (similiar to Carrie Underwood), need to build dimension from the roots. "Whatever color the lightest flecks of your eyes are, that should be your base," PK says. Request a quick "base bump" to warm up the roots first, and consider caramel or honey lowlights to bring out your eyes. Otherwise, a color like this could wash you out.
BRONDE
Your mom may have called it "dishwater blonde," but model, Heather (similiar to Taylor Swift's dark blonde), almost brown shade is now the most coveted among our clients. It's the most natural and the hardest to get," PK says. Ask your colorist for a dark ash blonde base with subtle highlights through the ends and around the top. "This is definitely on the darker blonde side," PK says.
SUN-KISSED STREAKS
Highlights are a great way for brunettes to experiment with going blonde. gently hand-painting on different shades of lightening cream without foil to mimic the effect of the sun. The technique, called balayage, requires skill, so make sure to find a colorist who specializes in it before booking your appointment.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, Who Are The Experts "
From my firend, Patrick Mcivor......These days, anyone and everyone can pose as an expert, and they do. Do we want a 13-year-old blogger telling women how to use products because we, the actual experts, haven’t gotten around to posting content? I have news for you, that’s what is happening now, and if you don’t take the time to utilize social networking to promote your business, that 13 year old will pull your business right out from under your feet.
Personalities/brands like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton are also taking a piece of the pie – they recommend products and people buy them – and they are NOT experts in the beauty field, they pay people to do their hair and makeup! They pay us! It’s happening in other industries too – a book recommendation from Oprah a is more powerful than one from the New York Times – she’s not a trained expert, either is the 13 year old girl, but they know how to market themselves as experts and it’s time that the REAL experts make some noise.
Start with Facebook – create a salon page separate from your personal page because professional pages offer valuable analytics about who visited your page and how often. Professional pages also don’t max out at 5,000 friends – something I found out the hard way. Having to accumulate those 5,000 again takes time, so do it right the first time.
YouTube is the other way to offer tips and advices to the public. I advise salons to create their own channel, because on YouTube, the more videos you have, the easier you are to find. To increase traffic to your channel, include QR Codes on your retail products and advise clients to scan them with their smart phones to access expert info on how to use the products.
At the very least, utilize Twitter to share quick tips and ideas and let people know what’s going on in the salon and on the road.
Just because we’re hairdressers doesn’t mean we have to shy away from computers like we did in the 80’s. Have fun and take control of your social network. Hey, if a 13 year old can do it, so can we!
Another very powerful tool that my friend did not mention, Pinterest. This tool allows followers to like several different looks as well as use it as a communication too to discribe for their own style to the hairdresser.
Remember, we are the professionals and it is our responsibility to advise our guests on beauty!

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Holiday Hair Ideas Continued"
TRY BLUNT BANGS
This type of fringe can overhaul your look in an instant. Plus, it works with just about every hair type (except for curly hair). Just tell your stylist not to cut bangs too thick or they'll overwhelm your face. To style, comb wet bangs flat and blow-dry with a nozzle attachment pointing down, and use your fingers to pull the bangs straight. If you have very curly hair, use a small, round natural-bristle brush to pull them taut.
GET MESSY
There's something romantic about hair that looks as though it were just casually pinned up. To create the effect, run mousse through damp hair and let it air-dry before sweeping it up—this way, even if you pull your hair back tightly, it will look soft.
For the most natural-looking body, concentrate volume on the sides of hair instead of at the crown. Spritz volumizing spray on damp roots and comb it through hair, then blow-dry with a medium-size round brush, pulling the brush under the hair and out to the side

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Holiday Hair Ideas Continued"
A deep side part makes any style more sophisticated. To make a clean part, apply styling cream to damp hair and, using the pointed end of a rattail comb, draw a part that lines up just beyond the arch of your eyebrow. Blow-dry hair straight, then spritz all over with a bit of shine spray and smooth with your palms. Then twist hair on the top of your head and stick in chop sticks to secure for added affect.
CREATE ROMANTIC CURLS
Even straight hair can hold these curls. Prep damp hair with volumizer, and blow-dry with a round brush. Next, wrap sections of hair around a medium-barrel curling iron, stopping an inch or two from the roots. Place the curls randomly so they don't look like old-fashioned ringlets.
1. Run a few drops of shine serum through damp hair and blow it straight with a paddle brush.
2. Brush the hair straight back so it's slick against the scalp, then gather it into a low ponytail just above the nape.
3. Tie the ponytail with an elastic and wind it around the base to create a bun.
4. Tuck the ends underneath and hold them with bobby pins.
5. Stick a few more pins into the bun in various spots to secure it.

FROM THE MASTER ARTISAN, PK'S UNIVERSE, ''Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving"
Here in the United States, Thursday we celebrate the annual holiday of Thanksgiving. A special day we set aside to reflect back on the past year and give thanks for everything we have been blessed with while remembering our past and history. Because today is a day of thanks, we would like to offer a sincere, “Thank you,” to each and every one of you.
While we have mentioned it several times here on the blog, we always like to re-iterate the point on Thanksgiving Day especially… we are truly thankful for the incredible opportunity we have to get to work with so many wonderful people, not just here at The Paul Kenneth Salon, but guest that we touch everyday. Every year we have the opportunity to actually change peoples lives through beauty. This industry is one of the last of the industries that allows us to touch people. We have had the great opportunity to work with the guest that has their hair growing back from chemo, the children that cut off their hair for 'locks of love', models that are showcased in magazines across the world to Paul McCartney on his tour through Boston. We have been truly blessed at The Paul Kenneth Salon.
So while it may or may not be “Thanksgiving Day” for you as you read this, depending where in the world you are located, I offer you our sincere thanks for all of the interactions we have had over the past year(s), as well as for everything you do to help the millions of guests you touch each and every day to enrich their lives and full potential through the power of beauty. A very Happy Thanksgiving day to all of you!

FROM 'THE MASTER ARTISAN' PK'S CORNER PRESENTS, 'Tips For Spring 2012''
Trend Tip for Spring 2012
loosely curled/slightly bended
"Hair was meant to move, especially Hairstyles for Spring 2012 must have movement, shape, surface finish and texture. It's all about the visual excitement, especially with color and texture," says Paul Kenneth about what he predicts are the absolute must have trends for Spring 2012. One of these trends is loosely curled/slightly bended Hair. He says with a few special products this style, plus a little guidance from your Paul Kenneth Professional designer, can be easy to achieve."
loosely curled/slightly bended
When wearing hair long and loose, texture is key for Spring 2012. One of the prominent texture looks for spring is loosely curled/slightly bended. Long, loose locks with a natural finish and a light bend throughout the hair. The bend should not be uniform but instead a haphazard bend moving front and back. The hair can be parted in this season's two preferred choices- center or side. The overall look should appear slightly unkempt and a bit rumpled. As if the hair just naturally falls that way. To create this look make sure the hair color has a bit a dimension with a slight highlight. The highlights should not start all the way up at the root but instead start a few to several inches away from the scalp, as if the hair has a bit of roots. If the hair color naturally has some grey in it, then the roots would have to be blended first then the highlights applied throughout. Although this look works for just about any age, it is a slightly trendier look so no grey roots allowed.
To get this look start with shampooing and conditioning hair with a frizz controlling shampoo and conditioner containing Sea Kelp and Algae to hydrate and smooth texture. Shampoo & Conditioners - P.K. Salon! Try SPA MD by Paul Kenneth Pro Shampoo and Paul Kenneth Pro Conditioner. Next apply a resin-free hair texture boosting, conditioning product to dampen the hair; let air dry or diffuse dry. Look for one with color protectants. Try Volume Mist by Paul Kenneth Pro Increase Smart Styling plus Treatment. Once the hair is dry, take large sections misting on small amount of shine spray, a powder-free, resin-free hair refresher and loosely twisting down to the scalp and pinning in place for about 10 minutes. Warm hair with a blow drier and then let hair loose. This is a great way to get bend and avoid the heat damage of a flat iron. If you do choose a flat iron to create bend, make sure to use a thermal hair protecting spray and keep your flat iron on a low heat setting. Try Thermal Protector by Paul Kenneth Pro Line. Finishing Products - P.K. Salon!

Paul Kenneth's Salon - Woburn, MA, 01801 - Citysearch
Concern - “I know I shouldn’t, but I HAVE to wash my hair everyday”- We run into this frequently. The reason for this Concern is the science of the scalp. Your scalp naturally produces oil to hydrate and condition your hair. Every type of shampoo, in the cleansing process, strips the hair of those natural oils. Just like your facial skin, if you consistently wash, it will become dry and lifeless. This is because the repeated shampooing strips hair of the oils. This is why shampooing 2 or 3 times a week is recommended to slow down the production of these oils. Over shampooing can also result in color fading and faster depletion of hair treatments. It is imperative to replenish the hair and scalp with these essential oils every time you shampoo. Shampoo & Conditioners - P.K. Salon!

'Fall Fresh Look' with a Paul Kenneth Professional
In this case…YES! TO BOB! Keira Knightley is one of the few people that whatever hair she sports, she looks beautiful. Okay, Okay, perhaps that's a little bias. This photo was taken recently at the Chanel show in Paris during Fashion Week and the bob really fits her. It gives her the right amount of elegance, chic-ness, but at the same time stay a little edgy. Generally, as women get older, they would gradually cut their hair shorter and shorter because it would aid an illusion that’ll make them look “younger” (a lot would get bobs as an easy cut) – generally it is not true, and won’t fit for most people – but with Keira, and her new angled bob, it does! I think she looks so fresh with this new hairdo, totally renewed. It compliments her face structure and her blessed high cheekbones. Looking at this picture, makes many want a bob now, not all face structure are able to pull off a Keira, but if you know you can! Please do! very hot, good job Keira.
Come in and Get your 'Fresh Fall' Look with a Paul Kenneth Professional. They will take the time to analyze your face structure and head form and give you that personalized 'Rock Star' look.
