My hair is oily at the roots, but dry at the ends and has no volume, what do I do?

"My hair is oily at the roots, but dry at the ends and has no volume. The more I style it, the drier the ends get, but the more I condition, the roots get oilier. Ideas?"   The first question I would ask is, how often do you shampoo your hair?  Generally the answer is the same, "every day", and this contributes to the problem. There are many articles about the danger of shampooing to frequent. Even Oily hair is affected by to frequent of shampooing. Yet, people with oily hair believe that the hair needs frequent shampooing. In all actuality, this increases oil in the scalp and strips the moisture from the ends of the hair leaving the hair dry, brittle and porous.   So how do you deal with this condition of eliminating or slowing down the oil on your scalp. Simple stop shampooing your hair. " Impossible ", you say.  lets examine the science behind the hair and what causes oil on the scalp. First, oil is created from the sebaceous gland that is connected to the hair follicles. The glands are located through out the areas of the body except the palm of the hand and the balls of your feet. Some people have an over active sebaceous gland. This will produce more oil on to the scalp and hair shaft.    The biggest impact that one could have in not producing more oil when shampooing, is to pat the scalp gently, not rub the scalp.  This will start to get you off the merry go round. Shampoo will remove any dirt or oil without rubbing. The ends can be gentle rubbed without damage.  Surprisingly, this simple step will change the amount oil on the scalp. However, to correct the dryness at the ends will require deep conditioners done daily and weekly.  This this part of your hair will take a much longer time to repair. Paul Kenneth Salon Gives Long strands a 'NEW' look with out sacrificing inches!

Give long strands a new look without sacrificing inches. The PK Salon design team in Woburn, Massachusetts, shares their style steps for creating this pin-curled bob:
1.After blow-drying hair with a volume spray and a large round brush, spray hair thoroughly with a thermal protector. Take one and a half-inch square sections, curl with a one-inch iron and pin-curl-clip them to base to set. Spray with PK Flex Hold Hairspray and PK Shine Spray
2.Starting at the nape, take down curls and sprinkle base with PK Volume Texture Powder. Back-comb each section all the way up to occipital bone in back and two inches above the ears. Spray top and bottom with PK Flexible Spray.
3.Starting center back, use a natural bristle brush to gently smooth down the top of the teased section, then with hands pinch ends into a point and start rolling under until you reach the nape. Secure the center of the roll to the base with a long bobby, using a sewing motion to weave in and out of the roll. Continue this technique on both sides and pin sections together so it looks like one consistent roll. Spray rolled hair with PK Flexible Spray.
4.Take down curled sections one by one, smooth with shine serum, gently shake to create an “S” like pattern and drape creatively over rolled section. Secure with long hairpins. Continue this technique for each pin curl.
5.On the top “Mohawk” section, sprinkle PK Volume Texture Powder onto the base of each section, backcomb lightly and smooth curled ends with shine serum. How to Get These Holiday Hairstyles

Wow, Holiday Hair and here’s How-To! It’s that time of year again. The holiday season is in full swing. From holiday parties to friends gatherings, you want to make sure your image is ‘Wow’, especially for all those photos! From head to toe there is fun to be done! HAIR needs to be hydrated with a protein rich deep conditioning treatment (PK Intense Hydrating Conditioner www.pksalon.com)

• A faux-bob is a fun look for medium to long lengths. Start with hair set with a curling iron, or hot rollers, tight or loose waves/curls. Then clip up a section of hair starting above corners of eye’s and create a horse shoe section. The hair that is left down, lightly tease from the underneath and spray with hairspray. Then roll hair under using your hand as a roller, keeping it loose and pin inside the roll. Then release the top section and tousle the loose hair on top of the rolled section, and pin randomly.

We are so excited to to support ‘Operation Re-Invent’ and support the women that have served our country.  We will provide complete make-overs to these women so that they can join the workforce again. Below is an outline of the project that The Paul Kenneth Salon & Spa will support fully.  We plan to have up to 10 women a month in our salon to council on hair color, makeup, and hair care products.  Our Team looks forward to this substantial impact on our community and give back.

coaches, some successful veterans now civilians—who can give them a solid

base to navigate the bureaucratic maze and reconnect to their new civilian life.

The bond with these mentors will

First, our women veterans will be assessed for their skills, military

background and experience levels, career goals, and personal inclination

for various types of jobs via a host of career and personality tests such as

Myers-Briggs. We will make sure that these women’s ambitions,

aspirations, and translatable skills are fully explored. Together we will

determine the best path to meet their individual needs.



Next, a clearly defined, individualized action plan is developed. Forexample, the plan may include working towards a college degree.

ROSE GOLD

Taylor (similiar to Blake Lively's warmed-up marigold shade is perfect for transitioning from winter to Spring. Paul Kenneth, Taylors colorist, mixes golden, honey, and apricot hues to create the multidimensional color. He finishes with nearly ivory highlights around the front to brighten her face. Because the lowlights underneath are prone to fading, he recommends frequent conditioning masks, like PK Spa MD, Rich Repair 60-sec Treatment (a favorite among his busy clients).

 

VANILLA BLONDE

If you want to go baby blonde like Michelle (similiar to Michelle Williams), be prepared to make a similarly major commitment. Paul Kenneth recommends touching up roots every three weeks. Ask your colorist for a bright golden hue with pale highlights—and because bleaching the hair this often is damaging, consider keeping your hair short to prevent breakage.

 

BLUSH BLONDE

Even women with very fair skin can pull off blonde hair without appearing washed out—just look at Suzanne (similiar to Emma Stone). The trick is choosing a hue that will add warmth to the cheeks, like this blush blonde. "She has warm tone blonde undertones with flecks of gold highlights all over," Paul Kenneth says. To maintain it, ask for a strawberry toner to use between salon visits. This will fill in the gaps where color has faded and keep hair from looking brassy.

From my firend, Patrick Mcivor......These days, anyone and everyone can pose as an expert, and they do. Do we want a 13-year-old blogger telling women how to use products because we, the actual experts, haven’t gotten around to posting content?  I have news for you, that’s what is happening now, and if you don’t take the time to utilize social networking to promote your business, that 13 year old will pull your business right out from under your feet.
Personalities/brands like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton are also taking a piece of the pie – they recommend products and people buy them – and they are NOT experts in the beauty field, they pay people to do their hair and makeup! They pay us! It’s happening in other industries too – a book recommendation from Oprah a is more powerful than one from the New York Times – she’s not a trained expert, either is the 13 year old girl, but they know how to market themselves as experts and it’s time that the REAL experts make some noise.
Start with Facebook – create a salon page separate from your personal page because professional pages offer valuable analytics about who visited your page and how often.  Professional pages also don’t max out at 5,000 friends – something I found out the hard way.  Having to accumulate those 5,000 again takes time, so do it right the first time.
YouTube is the other way to offer tips and advices to the public. I advise salons to create their own channel, because on YouTube, the more videos you have, the easier you are to find. To increase traffic to your channel, include QR Codes on your retail products and advise clients to scan them with their smart phones to access expert info on how to use the products.
At the very least, utilize Twitter to share quick tips and ideas and let people know what’s going on in the salon and on the road.
Just because we’re hairdressers doesn’t mean we have to shy away from computers like we did in the 80’s. Have fun and take control of your social network. Hey, if a 13 year old can do it, so can we!

Another very powerful tool that my friend did not mention, Pinterest.  This tool allows followers to like several different looks as well as use it as a communication too to discribe for their own style to the hairdresser.

Remember, we are the professionals and it is our responsibility to advise our guests on beauty!

TRY BLUNT BANGS

This type of fringe can overhaul your look in an instant. Plus, it works with just about every hair type (except for curly hair). Just tell your stylist not to cut bangs too thick or they'll overwhelm your face. To style, comb wet bangs flat and blow-dry with a nozzle attachment pointing down, and use your fingers to pull the bangs straight. If you have very curly hair, use a small, round natural-bristle brush to pull them taut.

GET MESSY

There's something romantic about hair that looks as though it were just casually pinned up. To create the effect, run mousse through damp hair and let it air-dry before sweeping it up—this way, even if you pull your hair back tightly, it will look soft.

BULK UP

For the most natural-looking body, concentrate volume on the sides of hair instead of at the crown. Spritz volumizing spray on damp roots and comb it through hair, then blow-dry with a medium-size round brush, pulling the brush under the hair and out to the side

GIVE YOURSELF A WAVY BLOWOUT

A blowout with body looks more modern than a stick-straight one. Begin by blow-drying the hair straight with a round brush, then part it on the side and, using large hot rollers, coil small sections of hair under, rolling them up toward your part. Then use a paddle brush to coax the curls into a few big waves.

 

 

 

TRY A CROWN BRAID FOR EVENING   

This sweet hairstyle takes only minutes to create. Braid a ponytail hair extension that matches your hair color and pin it at the nape of your neck. Wrap the braid around your crown, pinning the ends at your nape, then let your hair hang loose or twist it into a low knot directly below the braid.

 

          

 

 

 

 COME UNDONE

There's nothing sexier than hair that looks like a wind blown set in place. Mimic the effect by scrunching large sections of damp hair in your hands as you move a blow-dryer in circles around your head (hold it about six inches away). This fluffs the hair rather than matting it down. Another trick: Rub your crown lightly, like it's a baby's belly, for a few seconds to create slept-in texture.

Mark Wahlberg brought out his inner Marky Mark as he was photographed on a balcony having a spray tan applied for his role in his latest film.  In “Pain and Gain,” Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson play a pair of bodybuilders that get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.  To look the part in this “based upon a true story” movie, Wahlberg needed the assistance of a weekly Norvell Double Dark spray tan applied by Norvell’s own Tennille Cardinal.

Hats are the must have accessory for the fall and winter months. But it is not always so easy to look good in a hat--here is the secret it is all about the hair.  Celebrity Hairstylist, Paul Kenneth reveals how to make your hair look great under the most common hat styles of the season.
Hat Style: FedoraHair Style: Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.  Loose feminine waves are a great way to wear your hair under a Fedora. This type of hat has very sharp “menswear” angles. This is off-set by the femanine softer hairstyle.
How To Achieve This Look: Part hair in the center and smooth hair back into a low ponytail at the middle of the nape. Use a hair smoothing bore bristle brush and a hair smoothing product like PK Pro Smooth Reaction. Apply product to the ponytail also and brush smooth. Twist ponytail in one direction and wind around ponytail and secure with a few hair pins. Put on Newsboy and you are ready to go.
Hat Style: Beret Hair Style: Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out. A side swept ponytail is a perfect way to wear your hair under a Beret. A Beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that. Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
How To Achieve This Look: This look works best with straight or smooth hair. Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product like like PK Pro Smooth Reaction and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part. Shearling hats are beautiful and warm but they often crush the hair. A hair half-way up look is a great idea to make the hair look great while the hat is on and preserve the hair for when the hat comes off.
